Types of Expansion Joint for Bridges and Structural Applications

  • Metal Finger-Type Expansion Joints consist of interlocking steel "fingers" that permit longitudinal movement while maintaining a continuous and smooth driving surface. These joints are commonly used in long-span bridges and high-traffic areas due to their high movement capacity, excellent load transfer characteristics, low noise and vibration levels, and long service life.

  • Modular Expansion Joint Systems are composed of multiple independent support beams combined with elastomeric seals, allowing them to accommodate large and complex multi-directional movements. These joints are particularly suited for long bridge spans and structures located in seismic zones, offering high durability and excellent adaptability to structural dynamics.

  • Strip Seal Expansion Joints feature a single elastomeric seal positioned between steel edge beams, making them ideal for bridge decks and elevated roadways where moderate movement must be absorbed. Their key advantages include watertight performance, ease of maintenance, and the ability to accommodate medium-range joint movement.

  • Compression Seal Joints use pre-compressed elastomeric seals that expand once placed into a concrete joint. They are commonly found in parking decks, pedestrian bridges, and other lightweight structures. These joints are favored for their simple installation process, watertight sealing capability, and resistance to ultraviolet light and chemical exposure.

  • Asphaltic Plug Joints are flexible systems made from a poured asphalt-rubber compound that bonds directly to asphalt or concrete. Typically used in bridge decks and roadway surfaces, these joints allow for limited movement while providing a seamless driving surface. They are valued for their low cost, smooth ride quality, and ease of repair.

  • Sliding Plate Expansion Joints operate using overlapping steel plates that slide over each other to accommodate thermal or structural movement. These joints are used in both buildings and bridge structures and are appreciated for their high load-bearing capacity, straightforward design, and ability to manage significant thermal shifts.
